Ed Wasserman, West High Class of 1961, and President of the West End High School Alumni Association, and a graduate of Vanderbilt University,  is the recipient of the 2019 Richard S. Fountain Award given by the Steel Bridge Task Force of the Steel  Market Development Institute, a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute, the National Steel Bridge Alliance, and the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials' T-14 Technical Committee for Structural Steel Design.

The West End High School Alumni Scholarship is funded by bequests and donations.  The first award is a $1000 scholarship for the 2019-2020 school year and is awarded to Natalie Taylor Bergan, a student at Northeastern University in Boston, and the granddaughter of Betty Jane Maples Taylor, Class of '56, and Larry Taylor.


The Scholarship Committee of the West End High School Alumni Association will accept applications for the second one thousand dollar ($1000) scholarship to be awarded to a direct descendant of an alumnus of West High to be used for the 2020-2021 academic year.  Application forms  may be downloaded below or requested by mail from John Wade, West End High School Alumni Association, PO Box 160356, Nashville, TN 37216-0356.

The deadline for applications is March 31, 2020. Selection will be in April, 2020 and the award will be paid directly to the Bursar of the selectee's college or university.  Applications may be mailed to the above address.        

A very generous $5,000 bequest from the estate of Phil Harris, West High Class of 1963, has been invested in a Vanguard Fund and will be used for the Scholarship Fund.  The Fund will be administered by the Board of the Alumni Association and will continue to be funded through donations made to WEHSAA, earmarked "Alumni Scholarship Fund", and sent to the above address.  If you wish to donate through Pay Pal, please use the "Donate" button on the Home Page.  All donations are tax-deductible.

The Scholarship Selection Policy is as follows:

Academics (75%) – includes level of courses (Advanced Placement, Honors, etc.), Grade Point Average (adjusted to 4.0 system), Transcript (last seven semesters), SAR and ACT Scores

Service (5%) – includes in-school and community

Leadership (5%) – includes school, church, and community (in and out of school)

Interview (5%)

Essay (5%) – includes goals

Need (5%) – includes a copy of FASPA, adjusted gross income (copy of first page IRS 1040), and number of dependents presently attending college
